The discussion: Vera: It’s fascinating how Stardust Galaxies at z>9 directly addresses that excess UV brightness JWST is seeing—if it’s SNe-produced dust opacity, it fundamentally changes our picture of early galaxy assembly compared to models relying solely on stellar winds. Subrahmanyan: I agree the high-z dust mechanism is compelling, Vera, but I wonder if we are oversimplifying the transition. If SNe feedback is indeed the driver at these epochs, does that imply a much earlier onset for metal enrichment than some of our previous simulations suggested? Jocelyn: It links back to what we were discussing last week about the timing of dust formation versus starburst activity. If SNe are creating this opacity, then those PAHs discussed in the simulation papers—the Lifecycle and Emission Properties ones—must be evolving much faster or earlier than we modeled for lower-metallicity environments. Vera: Exactly. That's why I think the PAH evolution aspect is the more critical piece here, not just the initial burst of dust production. If dust properties are changing with metallicity as that paper suggests, then our assumptions about how these grains interact with UV light in those extreme high-z halos might be completely off track. Subrahmanyan: Speaking of structure and evolution, I'm leaning toward the dark matter implications from the self-interacting
